Sketchnote: Game Architecture

One of my favorite games is The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild which uses a combination of loops and arcs. The gameplay in BotW is filled various loops, such as combat encounters, puzzles, or resource gathering.  Players can choose to engage with these loops in any order or even ignore some altogether, giving a sense of autonomy and personalized experience. BotW also features an overarching narrative arc, which follows the protagonist, Link, as he tries to save the kingdom of Hyrule from the evil Calamity Ganon. The narrative arc provides a sense of purpose and direction to the player’s actions, but the flexibility in completing the main story allows for player agency and exploration.
