Critical Play: Your first critical play!

Among Us, Innersloth, Mobile

The target audience of this game includes individuals of all age brackets ranging from young teens to old adults. Typical games includes 4-15 people per lobby. The objective of this multi-player game is to have crewmates complete a set number of objectives for crewmates to win. On the other hand, imposters try to kill crewmates before they can complete their objectives. Each round, players complete their tasks and can report when they find a dead body. Imposters employ deception and confusion to try to convince crewmates that they are innocent. If players believe an individual is an imposter, they can vote to kill them. In terms of Formal Elements, players interact with the game through a 2d POV with the standard up, down, left, right, and action buttons. Furthermore, the game designers add incentives for being a crewmate and an imposter through the satisfying sound you get when you complete a task as a crewmate, and also the satisfying neck-snapping sound you get when you kill a crewmate as an imposter. In increase playability, Among Us has a variety of maps to play on, each with their own unique layout and features to make each game interesting and new. Among Us stands out as it was brought to the mainstream media through a combination of great timing with its popularity maturing during COVID-19 lockdown and through a vast number of Twitch streamers playing the game during the time as well. This game is different from other games as human communication is key and thereby the most enjoyable part of the game. It’s believed this game became as successful as it is through its excellent use of human communication as a primary motivator to get users to have fun. Although completing the objectives and winning is inherently fun, I found the most joy in conversing with friends about funny moments that occurred in the game and thus, I believe it fulfilled its goal of being a fun game. The most epic fail I experienced came from a close game as just before the game was about to be an imposter win, the lobby crashed and hence there was no official winner. Things I would change include the variety of maps available as playing on the same maps continuously gets repetitive.
