As mentioned as my favorite game in my introduction, the game I’ll discuss today is none other than Pokemon Pearl! The main Pokemon game series is known to have one of the most expansive, detailed worlds that engage the players in multiple types of fun: Discovery, Fantasy, Narrative, Challenge, Expression, and Sense Pleasure with its fantastic music and iconic visuals.
The particular aesthetic I would like to focus on is the sense of Discovery in playing Pokemon Pearl. The player is introduced to a new region called Sinnoh full of new cities, characters, and Pokemon, where the story progresses only as we explore new paths and locations. The player is encouraged to use the map mechanic, which visually reminds us that there is an entire region waiting to be discovered, leading to the dynamic of progressing towards paths we haven’t been before, encountering trainer battles and new Pokemon along the way.
A game mechanic that encourages a type of Discovery central to the series is the Pokedex, designed to log information about new Pokemon when we capture them for the first time, while giving us hints of what Pokemon we haven’t encountered yet. This pairs with the mechanic of throwing a Pokeball to be able to tame and personalize unique Pokemon, with the sense that it is now “our friend”. This leads to the dynamic of capturing all Pokemon that I see for the first time to learn more about the characteristics and backstory of each creature, the region, and how Pokemon interact with humans and each other!

The Pokedex entries, Pokeball-catching Pokemon, and the Sinnoh region map leads to a dynamic of actively trying to find and catch new Pokemon and explore new parts of the region, creating the fun of Discovery in my experience of playing Pokemon Pearl.
