Minecraft is a game that I really enjoy and have played for many, many years. One reason is because it’s a great example of a loop-filled game full of mini arcs and additional loop options (mini-games, mods, etc.) The main loops are gathering resources, crafting tools, and building structures. These are repeatable almost without limit. There sub-loops and sub-arc all the time, such as with potion brewing, redstoning, villager trading, and making farmings. As you master these, you get pulled into arcs like exploring a stronghold, nether fortress, bastion, underwater monument, or beating the ender dragon. These arcs aren’t tightly scripted, but to me, they feel meaningful because of the agency I have. I can shape how and when each arc happens. I really enjoy the blend of loops and arcs in minecraft. The loops keep me grounded in repeatability, and the arcs give me goals when I want them.
