MDA & 8 Kinds of Fun

One game I started playing recently is Call of Duty. This game involves many detailed mechanics like fast-paced movement, a wide variety of weapons, customizable loadouts, and killstreak rewards. There are also core rules like time-to-kill, spawn systems, and score-based objectives. They give rise to dynamics like positioning, flanking, holding choke points, and pacing your aggression based on killstreak potential. The interplay between player skill, environmental awareness, and real-time decisions creates tension. For example, the killstreak system encourages players to carefully manage risk.

These dynamics lead to the aesthetic experience of challenge and sensation. The tight gunplay, quick feedback loops, and haptic feedback deliver a kinetic experience, and there is also a strong sense of competition arising from how the matches pit players against each other and require complex map/gear knowledge. It also evokes fantasy, allowing players to step into the role of elite soldiers, especially in the Campaign (story) mode. This makes the game fun for me, as I feel like I have an escape from reality and feel the thrill of the challenge when playing against friends.
