Sketchnote: Loops & Arcs

Game Architecture of Cooking Mama

  • Core Gameplay Loop
    • The moment-to-moment interaction consists of following instructions and performing cooking actions (chopping, stirring, flipping, etc.)
    • Each cooking action forms a micro-loop where players:
      • Receive instruction
      • Perform the required action with the controller/touchscreen
      • Get immediate feedback on performance
      • Update their mental model of how to execute the action better
  • Skill Chain Structure
    • Lower-order skills (basic actions like chopping or stirring) build toward higher-order compound skills
    • Mastery of simple cooking techniques enables players to tackle more complex recipes
    • The frequency of these loops is high, with most actions taking only seconds to complete
  • Arc Structure
    • Each recipe represents a content arc with a clear beginning and end
    • Completing a dish delivers a “payload” of satisfaction and accomplishment
    • The visual presentation of the completed dish serves as evocative feedback
    • Mama’s reaction/scoring provides closure to each arc
  • Game Architecture Mix
    • Parallel Arcs: Music and visual aesthetics run alongside the core gameplay loops
    • Micro Parallel Arcs: Mama’s reactions and encouragements provide emotional stimuli during gameplay
    • Sequential Arcs: Recipes are strung together to form a larger progression structure
    • Expanding Loops into Arcs: Each recipe completion expands the core gameplay loop into a satisfying arc
  • Content Structure
    • The game uses a template approach where the same core loops can be filled with different content (recipes)
    • This allows for efficient content creation while maintaining the core interaction model
  • Retention Strategy
    • Uses a mix of skill mastery (loops) and content variety (arcs) to maintain player interest
    • Scoring system encourages replaying recipes to achieve better results (turning arcs back into loops)
    • Unlockable content provides progression motivation
  • Learning Model
    • Follows the interaction loop model where players build “wisdom” through repeated practice
    • Each recipe teaches transferable skills that apply to future challenges
