CS 247G: Final Class Reflection (Jailia Y)

Taking CS 247G has not only deepened my understanding of play and game design but also sparked a genuine enjoyment of play that I had never experienced before. Prior to this class, my exposure to games was minimal, limited to occasional board games with my family. I had no significant interaction with games, especially digital games and, consequently, assumed I simply did not enjoy them. My goal in enrolling in CS 247G was to explore the world of games and game design in hopes of discovering a newfound appreciation for them.

The most impactful concepts from CS 247G were the readings and lectures on playing games from a feminist perspective. Shira Chess’s work was particularly eye-opening, helping me realize that my previous indifference towards games was not only due to a lack of exposure but also rooted in implicit biases about gender and gaming. Chess’s insights illuminated how societal stereotypes had shaped my perception, leading me to believe that gaming was not an appropriate or enjoyable activity. Despite being aware of these stereotypes, I had unconsciously allowed them to influence my views and limit my engagement with games.

A significant turning point for me was the critical play assignment involving The Game of Life, a game I had cherished since childhood. This exercise revealed the underlying biases and harmful stereotypes perpetuated by the game, such as traditional life trajectories and materialistic values. This analysis taught me to scrutinize how games shape and reflect players’ identities and the importance of creating inclusive spaces within gaming.

One of the most challenging aspects of the course was my initial lack of exposure to games, which often left me feeling like an outsider. Engaging in class discussions was sometimes daunting because I lacked the background knowledge and references that many of my peers had. However, I embraced this challenge as an opportunity for growth. By maintaining an open mind and a positive attitude, I was able to learn from my classmates and gradually build my own gaming repertoire.

Throughout the course, I played a diverse range of games and received numerous recommendations, which greatly expanded my understanding and appreciation of the medium. This journey has been transformative, not only in terms of acquiring knowledge but also in fostering a personal connection to play and game design.

Moving forward, I am eager to continue my exploration of games and game design. I plan to enroll in CS 377G: Designing Serious Games to further enhance my understanding and skills in this field. With the foundational knowledge and newfound passion I have gained from CS 247G, I am confident in my ability to contribute to creating more inclusive and meaningful gaming experiences.
