Sketchnote: Game Architecture

One of my favorite game is Monopoly, which has a architecture of core gameplay loops and strategic arcs. The core loop involves the basics of the game (rolling dice, moving tokens, landing on properties, and taking actions) . This loop intertwines with mid-loops for trading, building, and managing finances, while sub-loops like jail, card draws, and auctions add flavor to otherwise a boring game. The game progresses through three arcs: the Opening Arc emphasizes initial property purchases and scouting, the Mid-Game Arc focuses on developing color sets and complex trading, and the Endgame Arc centers on dominant monopolies and strategic mortgage management as players strive to avoid bankruptcy and become the last player standing. Together, these loops and arcs shape a dynamic financial strategy game where negotiation, competition, and management become the key components of a classic game.
