Short Exercise: What do Prototypes Prototype?

Our team is working on guessing and recipe-building social game (in a board game format) that has many good chefs working to create a recipe with ingredient cards and a spy chef trying to sabotage the recipe.

Question 1: How intuitive and engaging is the gameplay for first-time players?
Importance: Ensuring that the game is easily accessible to new players is crucial for its success. An intuitive gameplay experience can enhance player retention and spread through positive word-of-mouth.
Type of Prototype: This is a role prototype, focusing on the gameplay mechanics and rules without detailed visual designs or finalized card sets. This prototype will allow players to experience the game flow and understand their roles within it. And let players play to see if they can understand the rules easily.
Prediction: New players will find the game engaging due to our interesting concept and premises but might initially struggle with understanding the role of the spy chef and how to effectively use ingredient cards. Adjustments to the rules or the way roles are explained may be necessary.

Question 2: Do players find the spy chef role enjoyable and balanced compared to the chef role?
Importance: Balancing the roles is essential to ensure that all players find the game fair and enjoyable, regardless of the role they are assigned. A well-balanced game encourages players to replay without being bored.
Type of Prototype: This is a look-and-feel prototype with a focus on the role dynamics and interaction between players. This prototype would simulate a few rounds of gameplay with more focus on the experience of playing as a spy chef versus a regular chef.
Prediction: The spy chef role will be highly enjoyed for its mischief and strategy elements, though it may need adjustments to ensure it doesn’t overpower the regular chef roles or make the game too challenging for the other players.

Question 3: How well do the ingredient cards and recipes encourage creativity and strategic thinking?
Importance: The core appeal of the game lies in its ability to encourage players to think strategically with the resource ingredient cards at their disposal. This enables a more engaging and rewarding experience.
Type of Prototype: This is an implementation prototype focusing on the ingredient cards and recipe mechanisms. This will involve creating a variety of ingredient cards and recipes to see how players combine them under different circumstances.
Prediction: Players will enjoy the challenge of coming up with recipes using the ingredient cards. However, there might be a need to adjust the complexity of recipes or the variety of ingredient cards to optimize the balance between challenge and fun.
