Individual Reflection

In this game design class, I have gained a comprehensive understanding of game design beyond entertainment and engagement. I delved into the concept of serious games and their potential impact on players’ mental, physical, and behavioral aspects. Through extensive game analysis and the application of fundamental game design concepts such as loops and arcs, I developed valuable skills in crafting compelling game experiences. One significant aspect of the course was exploring ethical considerations in designing immersive experiences that were respectful to cultural and gender norms. This exploration challenged me to think deeply about how to create engaging and respectful games that encourage retention while preserving the authenticity of these narrative. Working on a serial narrative game centered around finding where an eccentric, scientist went with his life’s work allowed me to put these concepts into practice.

The MDA framework played a crucial role in designing skill-based game mechanics that mimicked the day-to-day activities of such a scientists. This framework guided me in creating engaging gameplay loops and narrative arcs, fostering an experience that combined education and wonder. In our ChatGPT inspired guessing game, we iterated upon guessing, bluffing and prompt generation mechanics to create a playful and social aesthetic.

Engaging in discussions with my peers and learning from their game designs proved to be invaluable. The iterative process and rapid prototyping became second nature to me, as I found joy in the ability to quickly change ideas and receive valuable feedback. 8 types of fun allowed me to refine my designs and prioritize core fun  over high-fidelity polish. I also learned to integrate the course learnings into other areas of my life, leading to personal growth and improved decision-making. One of the challenges I encountered was balancing my AI coursework and design skills. However, I came to appreciate the integration of both aspects, allowing me to create more immersive and captivating narratives.

The playtesting experience was particularly enjoyable, enabling me to tap into playful improvisation and creative expression. It also highlighted the importance of the player experience and lasting outcomes. Throughout the course, I am grateful for the scrappy energy of paper prototyping, which encouraged rapid iteration and the exploration of diverse ideas. The focus on lasting outcomes and the impact on players’ hearts has left an indelible impression on me. I extend my heartfelt appreciation to the course instructors for their guidance, feedback, and inspiration, fueling my passion to continue the labor of love in game creation.

In addition to these specific learnings, the course had a profound impact on my personal perspective. I reframed my thinking and started considering myself as both a gamer and a game designer. Initially, I struggled with the influx of information and confusion about requirements and standards. The weekly pulse of critical plays posed a challenge, but the later change in deadline eased the workload. Furthermore, seeking support from the course staff, classmates, and teammates helped me find balance and regain focus. Working on different projects with distinct core mechanics and narrative approaches provided valuable insights.

Having a more multipurpose role in another project allowed me to excel in individual features but also required effective communication to avoid labor division miscommunications. The experience of game design within a team setting was particularly enlightening. I gained a deeper understanding of development dynamics and the importance of rapid game production.

In conclusion, this game design class has been a transformative experience. I have expanded my understanding of game design beyond entertainment, explored serious games, and honed my skills in game analysis and applying fundamental design concepts.
