critical play – games of chance(online poker)

For this critical play, I will be considering online poker which I played online. Online poker is a widely popular game, appealing to a broad audience by combining strategy, skill, and chance elements. As a digital variant of the traditional card game, it allows players to engage in a real-time multiplayer experience from the comfort of their own homes.

Poker’s unique blend of strategy and chance is largely based on the principles of probability. Each hand dealt, each card revealed, adds a new layer of complexity to the calculation of odds. The ability to update probabilities constantly contributes to the intellectual appeal of the game, creating a continuous interplay of randomness and strategy.

However, the element of randomness inherent in poker is what leads to its unpredictability, introducing an element of excitement and high-stakes tension with each hand. The thrill of victory when a long-shot hand pays off stimulates the release of adrenaline and dopamine, creating a deeply gratifying reward for the risk taken.

During the game, I noticed that when someone won, they would say it was because they were good at the game, even if it was mostly down to luck. This way of thinking can be reassuring but can also lead to more addictive behavior. Players who believe they’re good at the game might start to take bigger risks, always trying to get the thrill of a win they believe is based on their skills. This can lead to a cycle of gambling that could become problematic.

This intricate relationship between randomness, reward, and risk plays a significant role in fostering addictive behaviors. The unpredictability of poker, coupled with the exhilaration of a win and the immediate feedback loop, often drives players to continue gambling in pursuit of the same thrilling victory. This leads to the belief that past events can influence the probability of future independent events, leading players to think they can predict the outcome of inherently random incidents.

The addictive potential of poker – online or otherwise – is amplified by the game’s accessibility and the rapid pace of play. With the ability to quickly move onto the next hand after a loss, players are often driven by the belief that a win must be imminent. This can perpetuate a cycle of wins and losses that keeps players continually engaged and always chasing the next big win.

Unlike games wholly reliant on luck, poker’s blend of strategy and chance can lead players to overestimate their influence over the game’s outcome, thereby overlooking the substantial role of randomness. This illusion of control can foster overconfidence that might encourage riskier behavior and contribute to problem gambling.

In comparison to other games that use chance or probability, poker adds a unique layer of personal strategy and skill. In contrast, games like slot machines rely almost entirely on luck, diminishing the illusion of control and thus presenting a different profile of addiction risk. In these games, the anticipation of a win comes exclusively from the game’s outcome rather than any strategic decision made by the player.
