  1. One that I’m personally a fan of but is probably too extreme for the theme we’re doing is having the game secretly be a mystery game about discovering what secrets lie in your owner’s family that resulted in your concussion. It would make for some really weighty player choices. I’m probably thinking of this due to how Undertale is a cute game on the surface, but can be kind of dark underneath.
  2. Another approach is to have the game be mechanically focused, whether that’s movement (dodging obstacles and attacks), or ability usage (ghostly invisibility/move through objects stuff maybe). This would make the game more of a straightforward cheery game, where there’s a clear objective, and the main type of fun is challenge.
  3. A third approach could be some sort of in-between, where there are mini-games and small puzzles like in Undertale, so there are slight amounts of challenge, but still overall a casual mood. This would probably mainly have to rely on narrative for the type of fun.
