William – Sketchnote: Game Architecture

A game that I recently got and currently playing is Assassin’s Creed: Origins. It’s a very complex game similar to Witcher 3, but here are two of the most prominent interaction loops.

Combat loop. Learn: how to fight enemies. Decide: whether and when to use attack, strong attack, bow, block, parry, or dodge. Action: do the action you chose. Rules: if enemy is blocking, your attack fails but your strong attack disables their block, etc. Feedback: you get the kill or you die.

Since this is an Assassin’s Creed game, I have to mention the stealthy alternative. Stealth loop. Learn: how to take down enemies without getting into combat. Decide: which path to take, where to position, how to sneak up on enemies, how to use your eagle. Action: take the path you planned out. Rules: if you are seen by an enemy, rip your stealth, and enter the combat loop. Feedback: you get the takedowns or are seen.
