Sketchnote: Game Architecture

A game I enjoy is Project Sekai, a rhythm game. The characters are grouped into teams which each have various overarching narratives, which are unlocked when you the characters and team level up. These are short narrative arcs which combine into an overarching narrative arc. The more compelling part of the game to me, however, is the core loop of playing a song, during which you have to time various actions (taps, holds, and flicks) with the music. Each action is a mini-loop as well, as there is an immediate feedback of (PERFECT/GREAT/GOOD/BAD/MISS), which tells you how you are doing. Replaying a song and playing new songs improves your skill at the game, and the feedback is delivered via a grade (C/B/A/S), leveling up your characters, and leveling up as a player. In my opinion, the narrative arc(s) are not well integrated into this gameplay loop, which makes the narrative aspect of this game less appealing than the learning and improvement loop.
