MDA & 8 Kinds of Fun – Sonic Adventures (2D)

For this assignment, I chose Sonic Adventures (the 2D one). I remember this was the game I would play whenever I would get back home from schools (so I guess I was playing for comfort)

The mechanics of the game are as follows:

  1. Movement: Sonic Adventures has fast-paced movement mechanics that allow players to move quickly and perform acrobatic moves such as jumping, double-jumping, dashing, and spinning.
  2. Platforming: The game also features classical platforming mechanics, such as jumping and navigating obstacles playing as the main character “Sonic”, or one of his friends.
  3. Combat: The game has combat mechanics that allow players to attack enemies with a variety of moves, including punches, kicks, and homing attacks. These mechanics add a layer of depth to the gameplay and allow players to engage with enemies in different ways.

The game offers many kinds of fun of the 8. some are:

  1. Sense-pleasure: The audio in the game, the “click” when you collect a coin or the jumping tune, and the visuals with each different stage.
  2. Fantasy: The game features anthropomorphic animals with unique abilities, a colorful and imaginative world, and a sense of adventure and exploration.
  3. Discovery (and Exploration) : In the game, players discover hidden areas and collectibles in the game’s levels.

For me now, I play it for nostalgia, I am not sure where that fits in, but I feel like it should be added to the list somewhere.

Reading through the “4 keys to Fun” article, I find the game to afford “Hard Fun”. At certain times, I felt frustrated playing it, but this eventually added to the joy and Fiero of when I actually managed to finish a level or gain a new gadget in the game.
