MDA: Castle Crashers

All games can follow the Mechanics, Dynamics and Aesthetics (MDA) framework and Castle Crashers is no exception. Castle Crashers is a couch co-op 1-4 multiplayer 2D arcade adventure game originally released by Behemoth! in September 2012. The game begins with you as a knight in a castle being raided. Your knight has no weapon or buffs and needs to build up from nothing.

By yourself without the aid of weapons and leveling up, some of the levels are hard to get through. Your starting health is pretty low and if a player dies while playing alone, the character dies for good. Yet if you play with 1-3 other players, your character can be revived with CPR by another character and receive a small health boost. The level only ends prematurely if all characters die and no one is left to provide CPR. This collaboration mechanic encourages people to play together and also provides a crutch for users who are not as skilled so they can make progress too. It provides a way for all players to provide value to the team because at the very least, they can help stall for time and revive others. It helps makes the game less serious and a great introductory game for beginners to enjoy with experts!
