MDA & 8 Types of Fun

Tetris is a popular game that has existed for decades, but one that I have only gotten into recently. There are several mechanics that make the game fun (and addicting) for me:

  1. Simple and intuitive gameplay: The gameplay mechanics of Tetris are easy to understand, but difficult to master. The player simply needs to fit different shaped blocks together to create lines. At the same time, the randomized block shapes in Tetris create an element of unpredictability and challenge, which increases in difficulty as the player progresses.
  2. Fast-paced action: Tetris is a fast-paced game that requires quick thinking and reflexes. The player must be able to adapt to new shapes and configurations quickly in order to succeed. This keeps me engaged and focused, and provides a sense of adrenaline as the game progresses.
  3. Immediate feedback: Tetris provides immediate feedback to the player when they complete a line  — my brain receives a shot of dopamine each time I clear a massive block. And when I fail to do so and lose, I feel a strong urge to replay and redeem myself.
