Narrative / Overarching plot ideating

Pre-lore
– fox mafia’s pup is mauled by a creature / caught in a trap / other reason
– evil voices™ convinces boss that if he steals the forest magic he can bring his child back
– the evil voice is secretly wanting to take the forest magic for itself and take over the forest
– fox mafia steals the forest magic and ‘revives’ child
– the corruption takes over the mafia boss at the end
– forest magic is now inbued / intertwined with the child — there’s no going back… only the body of the child remains, but the soul is forest magic
– the power of the forest magic reacts unreliably; warps child away from fox boss who has the corruption right before the child is consumed by the corruption

enter player character

– you are an anthropromorphic critter
– wake up in some kind of small safe grove [maybe the tree stump] with no memories
– leave the room → meet the badgers
– the badgers explain:
– a catasrophe / corruption has overtaken the forest
– they found you unconscious in the woods when they evacuated their den, and took you with them
– explore the small safe haven, talk to the few badgers that made it, soon find the chief’s temporary new den
– meet the chief badger, who is a forest guardian [or more like a government job]
– he is old, wizened, and sad; he tells you much of the same thing, that one day the forest darkened and corruption suddenly emerged… they lost many badgers and couldn’t evacuate everyone in time
– as a forest guardian, he wields a small amount of forest magic; using this he has created this temporary safe haven when they couldn’t run any longer
– the safe haven wont last forever, and he expresses fear; where will they go? How far does the corruption reach?
you leave his den
– back in the village — they’re out of food and can’t keep travelling without food… one of the badgers knows a berry patch near Honeybadger Hollow where they ran away from, but:
– they don’t know what the state of it is
– all of them are kinda injured / tired / starving from running
– you decide to go back to Honeybadger Hollow to search for food / help / see what’s happening there, since the badgers saved you

ARC 1 – honeybadger hollow
– you find out about your innate magic (player doesn’t know it isn’t innate… yet) and restore the hollow

after saving the hollow:
– all creatures in the area / the missing badgers who were consumed by the corruption are released from the curse and become themselves again
– you realize you have the power to save the forest, and commit to embarking on an adventure across the forest
– you return to the badger camp to tell them the news
– one of the badgers thinks you’re a hero and Super Cool
– he says, in order to save the forest you’ll need a base (all heroes have a home base, according to him), so the badgers let you set up a base in the neighboring grove
your fanboy (fanbadger?) sets up shop in your own (empty) “base” which doesn’t have much of anything quite yet… but he says he wants to support the hero, so he gathers berries(?) and sells healing supplies(?)

End-game lore
– slowly uncover who you are / where you came from
– the corruption is spreadable; you must go to all the areas of the forest, each which has a Guardian that can provide map and some info
at the end you discover that you are the forest magic; only the body of the child that you were before remains in who you are
– the forest magic makes up you, and sustains you
– the last guardian reveals to you:
— once the last piece of forest magic is returned, you too will return to the forest
— will you “die” and become a part of the forest, or keep the last piece of the magic to stay alive?
— if you keep the last piece, the corruption will start to spread again…
