MDA & 8 Kinds of Fun: Pico Park

Pico Park is one of my favorite games to play with groups of friends. It is a multiplayer puzzle game where players have to work together to overcome obstacles and reach the end of a level. The mechanics of the game are quite simple: each player  controls a single character, which can move left/right and jump. Players can also stack on top of each other to reach higher platforms, and they can interact with the environment by picking up boxes and keys. In order to complete a level, the key must be retrieved and used to unlock a door, which all the players must enter through. If any player gets left behind, the entire team fails the level.

While playing this game, I love to see how people assume certain social roles and dynamics depending on who they play with. In order to adhere with the mechanics of the game, the players must synchronize their actions to ensure everyone makes it past the obstacles. This consists of timing jumps, stacking to reach platforms, or coordinating movements to avoid obstacles. In my experience, Pico Park is also a very communication-heavy game, as it requires lots of discussing (and sometimes bickering) to coordinate everyone’s actions. The simplicity of the game’s mechanics combined with the level of coordination necessary to pass the levels yields a fun blend of chaos and concentration that makes it especially fun to play with a group of friends.

I think that Pico Park would be considered a ‘fellowship’ game, as it’s objective and the enjoyment I’ve experienced from it is centered around teamwork and cooperation. In order to succeed at the game, players must be constantly communicating and compromising. However, I think it could also fall under the ‘challenge’ category’ since you are working to complete levels and avoid obstacles throughout the game. I think between these, the social interaction and dynamics are still what make the game the most fun.
