Short Exercise: What do Prototypes Prototype?

  1. After multiple rounds, is the game still fun?
    1. If people lose interest in the game over time, then it won’t be a worthwhile game. I predict that the first couple of rounds will be fun, but players may get bored if there’s no variation or progression, so I might need to introduce new elements over time.
  2. Do players feel emotionally connected to their choices?
    1. We are thinking about making a game that requires “poaching” good players to become bad. In order to make this fun, we need to make sure that the players are attached to their choices and feel some sense of emotional conflict when deciding.
  3. Do players grasp the game mechanics without a full rules explanation?
    1. If a game is too challenging, then players will spend too much time trying to understand it rather than playing. Ideally, even if players do not completely understand the rules the first time, they can still play the game and learn while also having fun.
