Hey everyone! I’m Renn and I’m from British Columbia, Canada. Currently, I’m a junior studying computer science (AI, HCI) and a hodge-podge of potential minors (German studies, creative writing). My favourite game of all time is Disco Elysium—a game that explores what it means to find hope in desolate places. The game resonates with me as it is equal parts political commentary, psychology, and poetry. It also uses mechanics like narration and probability brilliantly. Ultimately, I adore plot-heavy games with immersive mechanics that move the story forward. Other games I’d like to shout out include the Hades duology and Pathologic.
A recent game obsession has been Fear and Hunger and its sequel Fear and Hunger: Termina. These games push against the boundaries of turn-based RPG in order to immerse the audience in an unfamiliar environment. The storylines, settings, and characters are also well developed and take an anachronistic and sometimes full on Eldritch tone. I’ve been watching a bunch of video essays about the series and I’m often surprised at the sheer amount of lore and small details this game holds.
Additionally, I’m a big fan of deep dives into video game lore, integrating stories with mechanics, and in-game sound design!
