ISPS: Reflection

Before playing ISPS, I expected a systems game to focus heavily on strategy and interconnectedness, where success depends on mastering mechanics and managing resources efficiently. I anticipated the game might lean toward complex simulations, requiring high-level planning and multi-tasking through route efficiency. While ISPS did include these elements at the beginning, it pivoted more towards a game with playful narrative, accessibility, and seamless integration of mechanics into a cohesive experience.

The game struck a balance between challenge and enjoyment by grounding the experience in a relatable process: package delivery. The two mini-games—sorting packages and delivering them via a ship—demonstrated how speed and accuracy directly impact outcomes, making it clear that efficiency leads to rewards. These mechanics felt well-connected. Properly sorted packages fed into the delivery game, where you had to navigate obstacles while maintaining accuracy. The addition of monetary rewards for upgrades reinforced the feedback loop, creating a system that was based on player interaction.

The system reflected interdependence: mistakes in sorting led to fewer packages for delivery, reducing profits and slowing progress. The thematic planets with distinct obstacles added variety and kept the gameplay engaging, while the upgrades, such as automation or faster sorting, created a satisfying sense of progression. This subtly taught players the importance of optimization and adaptation.

Watching others play ISPS revealed diverse strategies and perspectives. Some players focused on speed, while others aimed for accuracy, showcasing the flexibility of the mechanics. Observing how different approaches yielded varying outcomes highlighted the game’s depth and replayability. It was particularly interesting to see players react to upgrades, as they prioritized different aspects of the system based on their experiences.

Overall, ISPS shifted my perception of systems games. I realized they can be both educational and entertaining, offering insight into real-world processes without sacrificing fun. This experience emphasized the value of clear goals, intuitive mechanics, and a cohesive narrative in creating an engaging game.
