Mind Map + Writeup: Working With System Dynamics

Our game is centered around the system of managing a high-end restaurant. Day after day, they work with their team of animal cooks to earn fame and recognition for their food. The system we are modeling has several natural loops inherent to the day-to-day work of running a restaurant; for example, everyday players must choose which ingredients to order or what dishes to serve, which will provide certain benefits and profits before offering the same choice again the next day. We also intend to implement longer loops, such as by hiring a new chef every so often or acquiring new perks or actions to take during a day of service. Similarly, the progression in fame of a restaurant can be modeled in a game as a well-defined arc. As the player progresses through the days, they will gain money and fame, and the quality of food and number and composition of customers should be expected to change. By the end of the game, the player will have reached the peak of success and the end of this progressive arc. In terms of values, our game will include values of teamwork and perseverance. Players may not be able to buy the highest quality ingredients at the start, or hire the most prestigious and talented chefs. However, by persisting through the game’s mechanical loops day after in-game day, they will be able to gradually achieve their goals of earning Michelin stars to reward their efforts. Further, chef synergy will be a key component of the gameplay, and players will need to strategize chef choice in conjunction with each other, dishes, and ingredients in order to succeed.
