MDA: Stardew Valley

Stardew Valley is an open-ended farm-life simulator. In this game, you inherit your grandfather’s farmland and work to build relationships with the townspeople in Pelican Town.

Mechanics
Stardew Valley offers a wide variety of mechanics. Most of these mechanics are used to gather items that can be sold for money or used to gift a townsperson to build relationships (denoted as hearts).

Players engage in diverse activities such as farming, fishing, and mining to gather resources. Farming involves tilling soil, planting seeds, and watering crops until harvest. Fishing requires mastering a mini-game to catch various fish. Mining yields geodes, ores, and loot from defeated monsters, aiding in tool upgrades and museum donations. In addition to these mechanics, players can also converse with townspeople.

Dynamics
The game’s open nature allows players to tailor their experience. Some prioritize profit by focusing on farming, fishing, and mining, while others invest time in building relationships with villagers. Players could also allocate their time to both, or even none of these objectives, allowing for dynamics to vary greatly between players.

For me personally, I like to maximize profits early in the game (year one) and focus on relationships later into the game (year two) since there is a feedback system that allows money to scale.

Aesthetics
Stardew Valley has many aesthetics (fantasy, challenge, discovery, fellowship, etc.) that contribute to its fun. One aesthetic that Stardew does very well is discovery. Through seasons, hundreds of items, unlockable storylines, and various settings (cave, farm, beach, Pelican Town, Ginger Island, Skull Caverns), Stardew Valley encourages its players to explore everything the game has to offer. In addition to the main content, Stardew Valley also has many secret easter eggs and secret notes for the player to unlock. Once a player progresses far enough into the game, players can also aim for perfection which evaluates how much exploring the player has done. The dynamic of Stardew allows for exploration as it leads to the discovery of higher valued goods that players can use and through currency and relationships players are able to discover more!
