Critcal Play – Games of Chance- Blackjack

For my game I chose the Blackjack online with the Washington Post. I had played a little of Blackjack before in Fallout New Vegas, so was excited to see if I still had some skill. From round one I was hooked. I kept losing, but I felt that by looking at the numbers in my hand, and that of my opponent I could figure out an optimal strategy, or reason one out mathematically over the course of several turns. I would change patterns then begin to go on a winning streak, only for me to immediately start losing again. Then, when I had just 50$ in the bank, a series of all-ins took me back to $1000 dollars, and my newfound confidence led me to losing shortly after. Overall, it was very fun, except for a couple of turns where it was clear that it was impossible for me to win no matter what strategy I employed. Even though I’ve read a lot about addiction, I couldn’t lie about how skillful I felt the more wins I received.

When you get on a losing streak, you want to bet more to get out, and the few times this strategy works becomes a memory that inspires you to want to come back.

I think this game definitely puts people at risk for addiction as it gives people an illusion of control by clues of  their hand and the revealed card of the dealer as well as the options to hit or stand. Even if you play what you think is optimal, you really aren’t in control at all. Overall, a very interesting experience.
