I try to elicit the feeling of mystery, whimsy, nature, and the sea.

Our team is fairly set on having the setting of the game be a container ship, as we believe that it provides a unique element of discovery, mobility, confinement, and mystery. There are various ways to approach this topic:

  1. One of my initial ideas was to play the game from the perspective of a seal. From observing the success of titles such as Stray, playing as animals seems to resonate with people and can introduce interest mechanics that would not be typically attainable with a human. There is also a sense of whimsy and light-heartedness when controlling an animal as opposed to a human protagonist.
  2. Another idea of mine was to structure the game linearly such that the player would take a journey as the captain of a container ship, attempting to deliver cargo from Port A to Port B. Along the way, they would run into various impediments, such as storms, pirates, etc. Someone had brought up the idea of completing different maintenance tasks on the ship, which I think would lend nicely to this style.
  3. A different way of approaching the above idea would be introducing multiplayer mechanics. We theorized about the implications of this, and came up with two possible solutions: a co-op-esque mode where two people work together on the same ship with the same end goal in mind, or a more competitive one, where two players are perhaps racing to deliver their cargo before the other. I think both styles could be fun and make the game more exciting.
