Sketchnote: Game Architecture

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild uses a large combination of loops and arcs. Within the game, there are many loops that the player can choose to engage with, such as combat, solving puzzles, cooking, gathering resources, etc. Most of the loops don’t require mastery of the skill to complete the game, so players can choose to engage with the loops they have the most fun with and ignore others. The game also has an overarching narrative arc, created by a sequence of interaction arcs. The unique part about the this game though is that it allows the player to complete the sequence of arcs in any order they choose, or even just skip the in-between arcs to the last arc, which gives players the freedom to follow their own path while still providing direction for them.
