What do Prototypes Prototype? – Ore

For our game, my team is modding War to be a team-based strategy game.

Are the decisions that the players are making sustainably fun ones?

  • This is decides the longevity of the game being played.
  • Decisions that may be fun the first time the game is played may not be fun several times around
  • My team’s project is a card game, so this concept can be tested just by playing the card game a couple times with our ruleset

Are the player relationships created by these games sustainable?

  • Some games (I’m looking at you, monopoly) make players angry enough to the point that they don’t want to play again, regardless of how fun the game is.
  • Similar to the last question, a shorter abbreviated version of the game that players are forced to play over and over again, to better see how relationships are affected

How complicated do we want the game to be?

  • We are working with several versions of our game that straddle the line between more social deduction versions and more strategic versions of our game, as well as versions with cards that have more interactivity versus less so. It would be nice to know which direction to commit to.
  • A prototype with different rulesets, as well as a storyboard for what a typical game might look like.
  • I think the players will enjoy some of the added complexity as long as they don’t have to keep track of everything. Surprises continually coming can keep the game fresh and the player on their toes.
