Short Exercise: MDA & 8 Kinds of Fun by Meerim Nurlanbekova

MAFIA

I really like MAFIA, especially when I get assigned to be a mafia! In this game we played in class last time being a mafia creates a  great dynamic versus when you are just a peaceful citizen or playing other roles like a doctor and police officer. This mechanic creates the most engaging dynamic in the game. It is ALWAYS fun to pretend you are not a mafia and defend yourself in an authentic way! My heart always beats faster when I am mafia, it adds a lot of adrenaline, fear, excitement, and other strong feelings. You are challenged to not make any dumb but rather thought-out interventions, read the room, and guess other player’s thinking processes. When you are mafia you are involved in the game fully!

However, I also find it intriguing and fun to be a peaceful citizen, because unlike the mafia you are not afraid to be revealed and to lie! When you are a peaceful citizen you use your intuition and it is fun to see who is and who is not mafia and defend yourself in a really authentic way! You laugh, and smile without hiding your emotions because you are not a mafia to be revealed 🙂

OPTIONAL:

The Museum of Play has a hall of fame for video games that have been important for the gaming industry or society. It’s interesting to see which games have been chosen and how they’ve influenced video games as a whole. The museum also has other ways of organizing fun, like recognizing important toys and showcasing women in games.

However, we might wonder how the museum decides which games and toys are important enough to be recognized. Also, some of the games inducted into the hall of fame are very new, so we don’t know if they’ll be important in the long run.

Despite these questions, it’s great that the museum recognizes the importance of play in shaping our culture and society. The hall of fame shows how video games have become an important part of our lives and how they’ve changed over time. It was very intriguing for me to see museums use games! Museums in my country do not use any games even for kids and they are mostly considered unserious. However, after this class, I realized that games are the best way to teach and learn. It makes the learning process engaging and dynamic!
