MDA & 8 Kinds of Fun

A game I love to play is Rainbow 6 siege. This is labeled as a tactical shooter game but I now understand that it is much more than that. 2 teams of 5 rotate 9 rounds between attackers and defenders. Defenders must defend a site with a bomb whilst attackers must plant a diffuser to take out the bomb. Attackers win if they successfully plant the diffuser on one of 2 sites or they eliminate all 5 members of the other team within the allotted time. Defenders win if they successfully prevent a diffuser from being planted or they similarly eliminate all members of the opposing team.

What makes this game exciting for me are tactical decisions that need to be made based off what seems like an endless permutation of factors. Each operator (character) has different abilities that can have different affects on different maps. Operators’ abilities also must be considered in synergy with your teammates. Forming a team of synergistic operators for certain maps and sites can all be opposed by the opposing teams decision for their operators. While there is the mechanic of choosing a cohesive team of operators, everything can change the moment the game begins. There are unpredictable factors that happen in game that force me to reevaluate my own abilities and those left on my team.

I also love how it is very much a team game. I’ve tried to play this game alone and it is not fun because it feels  nearly impossible to play. Communication and working with your other teammates is an essential part of the gameplay. Playing with my friends and being able to communicate with them verbally through strategy and events in the game is part of the excitement and often leads to a better chance of winning. Aesthetically, this game would be categorized as mainly a fellowship since working together is inherent to the game.
