MDA (Mechanics-Dynamics-Aesthetics) framework is an approach to game design that was described in the paper we read. The MDA framework has three main components:
mechanics – game elements that create the game’s system;
dynamics – patterns of behavior that emerge from the game elements
aesthetics – experiences players have when playing the game.
The paper discusses how the MDA framework can be used to analyze and evaluate game design.
Moreover, it gives us 8 types of fun:
Sensation: the enjoyment derived from sensing things physically. Fast-paced, high-energy games might be particularly enticing to players who like physical challenges and thrills.
Fantasy: In games that let players escape reality and immerse themselves in make-believe worlds, fantasy is frequently discovered. Narrative: storytelling and drama. Players who enjoy following a tale or discovering new countries and cultures may find narrative-focused games to be particularly appealing because they frequently contain strong narrative structures and well-developed characters.
Challenge: the satisfaction that comes from overcoming difficulties and attaining objectives. Games with a challenge-oriented focus are frequently competitive or require skill and strategy to win, and they can be particularly alluring to players who appreciate a good challenge.
Fellowship: a social component in games that lets players engage and develop relationships with one another. These games can offer players a chance to connect with friends and family and might be particularly enticing to players who enjoy socializing and teamwork.
Discovery: Games that emphasize discovery might be particularly intriguing to people who like mystery since they frequently feature an open-ended structure or let players explore new settings or discover secrets.
Expression: the chance to express oneself and create through games. Players who appreciate art and creativity may find games that put a strong emphasis on expressing fun particularly interesting because they frequently let players modify their characters or create their own material.
Submission/abnegation: Games that emphasize submission or abnegation might be particularly alluring to players who are seeking a break from reality since they frequently let players escape the pressures and obligations of daily life.
