What do prototypes prototype

For our game, which is constantly evolving, we made a full prototype in Figma and then printed it out so that the users could physically play it. At first our

  1. Does our game feel distinct from codenames, outside of changing the word format to a picture format?
    1. Important question to answer: we want to have a game that feels like it can be fun in its own right.
    2. type of prototype: Same base prototype with a variation of the rule card. Instead of classic codename rules, we’d throw in some complicating rules.
    3. My guess: Our game currently doesn’t feel different enough from codenames.
  2. Does our game spark creativity or does it stump people?
    1. Important question to answer: we want to have a fun time with the game, and if it is too hard to play that will not be the case.
    2. Type of prototype: Same base prototype.
    3. My guess: Our game currently requires a bit too much thinking for it to be fun for the users, we may want to see where we can let them rely a bit more on their existing knowledge.
  3. Does our prototype utilize general knowledge or is the content too niche?
    1. Important question to answer: we want to have a game that feels accesssible to people who have totally different lived experiences.
    2. type of prototype: Same base prototype, with a variation of the “people” cards. Instead of illustrated characters, we’d use an alternate deck with pop-culture figures.
    3. My guess: Our game will feel more accessible when we use more commonly known people.
