Sketch Note – Loops and Arcs

A game I enjoyed playing growing up was Poptropica. It had a set narrative and a mix of loops and arcs that ensured that the player didn’t get bored. An example of the loop narrative structure was on a specific Island (Poptropica is structured in different themed Islands one can play) that forced me to go sail the world and trade to improve my ship and eventually find treasure. The arcs in Poptropica are broader and are the bigger narratives within each island, which range from participating in the Olympics or fighting supervillains. Skill loops are less present but certainly exist within each island, where you can gain items that make playing the game easier. Additionally, as you complete islands, you unlock tougher islands, showing how skill loops are implemented in this game.
