What do Prototypes Prototype?

The game I have in mind for p1 is Memorize the Dance: start a chain of dance moves, adding a new one every person. First person to mess up faces a penalty.

Here are a few questions to consider:

Do players get roughly the same level of engagement / challenge at different positions in the line?

This is an important question to answer because we want all players to feel equally involved in the game process, regardless of their position. To answer this question, I will have a group of players play the game several times and each time they would get assigned a different position. At the end of the prototype testing, I will ask them to rate the level of engagement / challenge of the several positions they have played on a scale of 1 to 10. My guess is that the different positions in my game are equally engaged, although in the first round, the level of challenge will increase the further the person is down the line.

Do people from different age groups find my game fun and easy to play?

This question is important because I intend this to be not just a fun game for friends but also for family members, so I do need to take into consideration children and senior people. To answer this question, I will invite users from different age groups to test out the prototype and hear their feedback on whether they are physically capable to accomplish the task. I might also create a prototype where e.g., senior people have a special power card that can allow them to skip any move that is physically challenging to do. My guess is that we might have to make special accommodations to make our game more inclusive.

How to design the game in a way that players get something new and exciting each time they play it?

With the current basic rule, it is easy for players to get bored after a few rounds. In order to make the game replayable, it is important to add in additional mechanisms such that players get slightly new / unexpected experiences each time they play it. To test out what mechanism would best achieve this goal, I will design multiple prototypes, each with an extra mechanism such as each player has to imitate a celebrity in their dance move, or make a weird / cute sound while dancing. I will get players’ feedback on which of these mechanisms make them want to play the game again. My guess is that people would get bored after playing the basic game several times, but adding in the wildcards would better engage players to replay the game.
