MDA & 8 Kinds of Fun — Valerie

Plants vs. Zombies GOTY Edition on Steam

Since I was young, I have loved to play Plants vs. Zombies. It is a game where you guard your house against zombies using plants! In particular, the types of fun that the game provides me is discovery and sensation. In the game, every time you successfully pass a level, you get to unlock new plants and new background settings. For example, as you level up, you can progress from the backyard to the swimming pool to the rooftop, as well as from daytime to nighttime. Each setting has a different aesthetic and poses and different set of challenges, giving a sense of exploration.

Moreover, you have the opportunity to craft your own battlefield using a variety of plants from your collection (each with different appearances and powers). Watching the battle unfold as colors and shapes shoot across the screen appeals visually to the senses. For me, a large part of the fun is not only strategizing, but watching what I have created! There are different sets of plants to choose from depending on day or night, creating a contrast in the atmosphere – vibrant and bright versus dark and mysterious – which adds to the feeling of novelty and intrigue as I progress through the game. Overall, the mechanics of unlocking new things, adding to a collection and curating each scene contributes to my deep enjoyment of the game.
