MDA: Cytus II

Cytus II is a music rhythm game created by Rayark Games with a rich selection of songs, cyberpunk worldview, and an interesting storyline.

In the beginning, Cytus II attracts players by creating an interactive, frequently rewarding dynamic constructed through the standard rhythm game mechanics, “playing a song” – tapping on different icons on the screen following the music rhythms. After playing a song, the player would get some experience score that contributes to their level, which unlocks a higher difficulty level for the current song, other songs, and the storyline of the current character. This contributes to the aesthetics of sensation and challenge as players enjoy the fun of listening to different songs, improves their rhythm skills, and receives reward when complete challenges constantly.

However, as the game progresses, although the main mechanics remained unchanged, the dynamics shift to repeatedly playing songs to unlock new perspectives of the storyline and worldview. The main source of joy expands to narrative and fantasy as the player gradually learns about what happened to each character through their memory. This sense of narrative is created through the dynamics of gradually unlocking songs/characters (many of which were initially hidden) as the player’s levels go up.

Although the main mechanic for Cytus II is song playing, the dynamic of player interaction with the game shifts over time. The aesthetics also gradually expand from mere sensation and challenge derived from each song to the narrative and fantasy of the background story, which makes the game more interesting over time.
