JRPG:
Our group’s first idea was a JRPG where the player explores the spaceship, room by room, and in doing so, triggers the narrative of the game and advances the plot through various interactions with other NPCs on the space ship. Using an engine like RPG Paper Maker would simplify the process of creating the game and its mechanics within the time frame we have. Combat would be minimal and rather symbolic and the game would focus more about exploring the ever-changing space of the space ship as the parasitic infection takes hold of the ship and its members, with splatters of blood becoming more prevalent over the days. The player’s decisions in how they interact with each NPC may trigger certain actions that may eventually have positive or potentially devastating outcomes.
Narrative Puzzle Adventure:
Another idea would be to force the player to move around the space to complete puzzles, giving them less agency to explore the space while still remaining in the setting (could still potentially use RPG Paper Maker for this). This way, the player could discover more about the story and space through their puzzle-esque task solving. These puzzles would be the main driving force of the narrative as the player struggles with the infection inside him that he does not know about, while still trying to maintain his existing relationships with the rest of the crew on the ship.
Visual Novel:
Our story could honestly be expressed as a visual novel in how much we’ve already fleshed out a lot of the NPCs’ backstories. Here, the player will automatically be able to go to any room they choose via a map of the spaceship (similar to the ship map mechanic in Among Us) where the player can explore various artifacts scattered across the map such as Emma’s diary or Sarah’s fridge. The player’s interactions with the NPCs would be more textual, in a similar format to that of Doki Doki Literature classroom.
