Short Exercise: MDA & 8 Kinds of Fun – Noe Chicas

I played Overwatch 2, and honestly, it wasn’t a great experience. While the mechanics were solid, they often led to frustrating dynamics, such as unbalanced team compositions or overpowered characters that broke the flow of the match. Some heroes were so strong they completely threw off game balance and made planning feel pointless. There was basically only one meta, and it got boring.
Then a new game was announced: Marvel Rivals. At first, everyone was skeptical. The hero shooter genre had already fallen off, and it seemed impossible for what looked like a copycat to fix those broken dynamics.
But to our surprise, Marvel Rivals took those same mechanics and, I’d argue, improved on them. Each character feels unique and genuinely fun to play, especially in how their abilities support different playstyles. I love playing support roles, and the dynamic of helping my team succeed feels much more rewarding here. While some characters still feel a bit strong, every character has a counter, which keeps the game more balanced.
All of this creates an aesthetic of empowerment. The game blends Sensation, Fantasy, and Challenge in a way that keeps me engaged. I feel like a vital part of every team comp. Playing as Jeff or Rocket Raccoon gives me high mobility and fast-paced action, making me feel like I’m making an impact as I keep my team alive!
