Visual Design of Games

Hyper Light Drifter is the most beautiful game of all time. They use alien, computer-like color pallets, combining brilliant neons and desaturated blues and greens to make a perfect concoction of dreamlike space colors. It uses techno pixie colors to depict a natural world. Also, their decision to use pixel art and cel shading enhances the impact of the colors because you don’t get muddy or busy textures, everything feels like it was painted with only a few shades of neon and grey. Finally, they use size and proximity in different moments to indicate the large size of the dead titans of the world and to communicate the overwhelming strength of a boss encounter.
