What do Prototypes Prototype?

  1. Is this game suitable for strangers as well as friends?

This question is important because our target audience is for both strangers and friends, especially those friends who are catching up or strangers who want to get to know each other better. Although we in CS247G are classmates, many of us are still strangers, and so play testing it out with people in the class will allow us to gauge comfort levels amongst “strangers” who are somewhat familiar with each other; I predict that we’ll have to make another iteration as the questions might be too intimate for the moment, but we shall see.

2. What’s the best way to keep score and should that be consistent across levels?

This is a key mechanic of the game that we haven’t completely ironed out, and hope to prototype this by having each person do their own scoring for around. I think this will be messy at first, but it will help us to determine a way forward.

3. How should we integrate three different levels?

As our game has three levels, we are trying to figure out how to integrate the levels into one cohesive unit which will be done by the playable prototype and watching the dynamic around that. I think that as people are playing, by virtue of the names of the different rounds (Stanford Fall vs Winter vs Spring), a narrative might pop up that ties it together.

4. What should be the feel of the game?

By watching people play the game, hopefully we can understand some of the dynamics that emerge. Are people comfortable sharing or reluctant to reveal too much information? Do they exhibit increased understanding of each other (fellowship kinda fun) or simply aim to get more points and win (challenge kinda fun)?
