Critical Play: Puzzles

Gorogoa, a puzzle game designed by Jason Roberts and published by Annapurna Interactive, offers a unique and captivating experience for players of all ages. It is available on multiple platforms, including PC, iOS, and Nintendo Switch. At the core of Gorogoa’s gameplay are its inventive puzzle mechanics, which require players to navigate a grid of four illustrated panels, zooming in, zooming out, and rearranging them to uncover connections and progress through the game’s narrative. These puzzle mechanics empower players to actively participate in the creation of the game’s narrative, fostering a deep sense of ownership and emotional investment in the story.

The panel manipulation mechanics are crucial to the player’s experience, as they allow for a high degree of player agency and creativity. Unlike many other puzzle games that present players with a set of predetermined challenges and solutions, Gorogoa’s mechanics encourage players to experiment and discover their own path through the game using the puzzle panels. This freedom to explore and interact with the game’s components creates a strong sense of ownership over the experience, as players feel that they are not merely solving puzzles, but actively shaping the narrative itself.

For example, in one sequence, as shown below, I had to guide the protagonist through a series of rooms by connecting doorways and windows across different panels, as shown in the image below.

The order in which I chose to arrange these panels ultimately determined the path the character took, and by extension, the way in which the story unfolded. This level of interactivity and choice created a deeply personal and emotionally engaging experience, as I became a kind of “co-creator” of the narrative rather than just a passive observer. Additionally, the emotional impact of Gorogoa’s panel manipulation mechanics is further enhanced by the game’s visual aesthetics. In the panels above, the hand-drawn illustrations are not only beautiful but also serve as a key element in the game’s storytelling. Each panel is a work of art, carefully crafted to convey a specific mood or emotion. For instance, in this case, there is a metaphor to the trials of faith (religious or otherwise) in the never-ending stairway and the bowing figures. Therefore, by providing players with the tools to construct their own unique narrative journey and allowing them to experience an emotional landscape through its art, Gorogoa’s mechanics foster a deep sense of investment and attachment to the story and its characters.

Moreover, the panel manipulation mechanics serve to blur the lines between gameplay and storytelling, creating a seamless and immersive experience. As players zoom in and out of the illustrations, they reveal new details and perspectives that contribute to the game’s overall narrative. For example, in one scene, zooming in on a bookshelf revealed a hidden compartment containing a key, which the player must use to unlock a door in another panel. As a player, I found it very fascinating how the story was woven into the puzzles themselves. Every time I discovered a new connection or detail, it felt like I was peeling back another layer of the story. This constant interplay between the micro and macro aspects of the illustrations creates a rich and layered narrative that rewards player curiosity and attention to detail. By encouraging players to actively seek out these connections and discoveries, Gorogoa’s mechanics generate deep emotional engagement from them.

However, the open-ended nature of Gorogoa’s panel manipulation mechanics can sometimes lead to confusion or frustration, particularly when players find themselves stuck on a specific puzzle. In these moments, the sense of agency and ownership that the mechanics provide can be undermined, as players may feel that their creativity and experimentation are not being rewarded. To address this issue, the game could incorporate more subtle visual or auditory cues that guide players towards potential solutions without explicitly revealing them. For example, a gentle glowing effect around certain panels or a soft chime when players are on the right track could provide just enough direction to maintain the sense of discovery and accomplishment that these mechanics aim to create.
