MDA — Peter Ling — Super Mario Galaxy

A game that I love is Super Mario Galaxy on the Nintendo Wii. I haven’t played it in years but remember it very well and always really enjoyed it. The game has numerous different mechanics that come together to make it whole. The user controls Mario in space and there his main mechanics are his ability to run, jump, ground pound, and throw items. Combining all of these, the game creates a dynamic that mixes in problem solving, movement through maze/obstacle course like settings, and battles with enemies. And because each level is contingent on all of these, it creates a dynamic that is constantly changing for the player. Sometimes they might have to really think about where a clue to open a door might be, and on the other side of that door will be an enemy waiting to attack. The player needs to be ready for everything and I believe that this game did a great job of combining it all.

The game is also broken down into smaller pieces for the player. Obviously there is one overarching objective of the game which is to, like most Mario games, save Princess Peach. To do so, he needs to collect Power Stars by defeating bosses and completing missions in different galaxies. This creates another dynamic for the player where they can strategically think about how they might need to approach each level and see how it can help them in the long run.
