Introduce Yourself – Derek Hwang

Hi everyone, I’m Derek (he/him/his). Though I used to play on console and handheld, I often find myself playing gacha games on my phone. For those who don’t know, gacha games are games (usually in the anime artstyle) which revolve around spending premium in game currency for characters / equipments for a chance of getting the character / equipment. In other words, it’s all up to luck! Or, how much you’re willing to spend. The term actually comes from gachapon (a Japanese term for a machine which dispenses small capsule toys at random).

My favorite game of all time is probably Pokemon Platinum (my second every Pokemon game). I fondly remember getting stuck in the distortion world for hours and hours until I finally had a friend help me out with finishing that section and how that same friend traded a level 100 Rayquaza named RayRay which carried me through the elite four and Cynthia. Also, Giratina Origin Form is just really cool.

A recent game that I’ve enjoyed (and continue to) is a mobile (iOS, Android, PC) gacha game called Punishing: Gray Raven (PGR). It’s a action game where you control a team of 3 characters and can quick swap between them to perform character specific combos and special attacks. There’s also an orb system where you have to match three of the same color to do special orb attacks. It’s really fun to see your characters do flashy attacks and the boss design in this game is incredible. It’s super satisfying to defeat a boss after learning the attack patterns and perfecting your dodges. I’d easily recommend this game to anyone who likes action games (it’s kind of like a mobile Dark Souls game if you ignore the gacha part). It also helps that PGR is one of, if not the most generous gacha game I’ve ever played.
